DIY Glass Painting

We are working with Martha Stewart Living for the entire year to come up with some of our favorite crafts using her new craft product line!

This month I had enlisted in the help of our editor, Megan. She had some glass she wanted to paint and after seeing her stash, I knew that she’d be perfect for this project. Take it away, Megan!

So, I had been on a hunt to find something cute to use with Martha Stewart Craft’s new line of glass paint and at my local thrift store, I stumbled upon these two cute dessert looking glass bowls for $1 each!! How could I pass that up!! I brought the bowls home gave them a good washing and wiped them down with alcohol then I got to work!

The project consisted of only a few materials and the process was pretty simple. Choosing my paint colors was probably the hardest part! Martha offers two types of glass paint finishes, “frost” and “gloss” I ended up going with “frost” colors Mace, Blue Calico, Yellow Jacket, and Sea Lavender. I squirted each one into a little pile on a disposable plate.

Now I had to pick my tool to paint with… I went with the smallest sponge tipped stick, then I went to decorating!

For my design I wanted to cover the base with dabbed on circles and thin them out as you go up. So I dipped my stick in the first color and randomly pressed it all over the bowl but was heavier with my pattern on the bottom. Keep in mind you don’t want to paint where it can come in direct contact with you food (so not on the inside) While my first bowl dried with my first color, I did the same thing to the second bowl and just kept rotating bowls using each color. *on the bottom I did overlap my circles and colors.

After I was done with the painting I let them air dry for about an hour then I chose to bake them. You can either let them air cure for 21 days or bake in the oven for 30 min at 350*, considering my impatience I chose to BAKE!! When baking your glass you need to put it in the oven while the oven is cool, turn it on to 350* and set the timer for 30 min. When time is up I let them cool in the oven for another hour and then they were finished! And that is it!! Pretty easy!!

Glassware can be hand-washed or is safe on the top rack in the dishwasher!

After this point, I went a little crazy with the paints and tried to find other things to do. Glasses & a fishbowl were up next!
