“Benefits of Bite-Sized Snacks”

Weight loss seems to be on everyone’s mind.  Whether they talk about it or not, the majority of folks wish they could drop those pesky KGs that seem to be lingering from too many festivities at Christmas.   While most people may want to lose a bit of weight, only a select few will be making the right choices to actually make it happen. Crash diet trends come and go, but true lifestyle changes are where the real weight loss success occurs.  If you are looking to lose weight and keep it off, then read on for tips on what snacks to select to help you get back into those skinny jeans in no time.

 

  1. Decrease Carbs

 

Don’t eliminate carbohydrates all together, but significantly decreasing them will aid in weight loss.   One way carbs often sneak into your diet is in snacks. A quick piece of toast or a packet of chips may seem harmless, but the carbs add up and so do the KGs.  When trying to lose weight, choose low carb snacks to get you through the day.

 

  1. Don’t Skip Breakie

 

Hunger and starvation are not the way to weight loss!  Ensuring your metabolism is working at full tilt requires you avoid crashing and burning.  Eating a healthy breakfast is one of the best ways you can keep your metabolism ticking along all day long without your blood sugar crashing leading to binge eating of unhealthy food.  A healthy breakfast could be greek yogurt and fresh berries, or an egg white scramble with veggies.

 

  1. Water

 

Sure water is not necessarily a snack, but it is one of the most important factors in healthy weight loss.  Often when people think they are hungry they are actually thirsty.   In addition to carrying around healthy snacks, always keep a water bottle with you and be sure to drink up before you start snacking.

 

  1. Nuts and Berries

 

It seems kind of cliche to carry around nuts and berries when you are trying to lose weight.  But in reality, in combination, nuts and berries provide a snack that fills you up and satisfies sweet, salty and crunchy cravings.  So instead of reaching for that bag of potato chips, grab the pre-packed bag of almonds and blueberries that you so smartly packed in your lunch today!

 

  1. Oh, Hey Hummus

 

One of the greatest snacks of all time for weight loss is hummus.  This is a snack that can be paired with so many things such as crackers, carrots, cucumbers, pita bread, olives and the list can go on and on.  You can buy a tub of hummus from the grocery store or easily make it at home using canned chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice and olive oil. Making it at home is fun because you can adjust the flavours until it suits your taste buds.  I personally prefer a very lemony hummus with cucumbers and cracked pepper!

Snacking can make or break your attempt at weight loss.  If you think you have your snacking totally under control but you are still not losing weight, it may be time for a food journal.  Keep track of everything you eat for one entire week and see if patterns emerge like eating baked goods every day at morning tea or chocolate after dinner.  Weight loss doesn’t require huge grand modifications in your lifestyle. Rather, be mindful about your overall eating and get moving every day. Before you know it, you will be at your ideal weight.
