Hollywood is going green!
On April 22, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in Earth Day. In celebration, let’s take a look at eco-friendly celebrities like Jessica Alba, Mario Lopez, and Tori Spelling who inspire others to protect Mother Nature.
Look through our list of high-profile families who minimize their carbon footprint:
The reality TV mama recently opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about going green “everyday,” not just one day out of the year.
“Everyday is Earth Day in our house,” Spelling said. “We definitely try to teach our kids to take care of the earth. Just the other day, actually, in fact it was in the playroom, Liam came up and said I turned off the lights in the playroom because I don’t want the earth to get sick. It was really cute.”
She added: “We teach all about recycling, we compost. We try our best to teach them how to take care of the earth.”
From her chic sense of style, to her hands-on playdates at the park, to her eco-friendly business, we can’t get enough of Jessica Alba. After creating The Honest Company last year, the mom-of-two is now promoting her debut book, The Honest Life.
“It’s a colorful how-to guidebook for people who want to make a healthy and non-toxic home without giving up the fun fashionable things,” Jessica recently opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop. “I hope people will be inspired to make the ideas their own and find what works for them.”
She went on to talk about modeling an eco-friendly lifestyle with husband Cash Warren and their two daughter Honor, 4, and Haven, 1.
“First and foremost, we try to model and practice eco-friendly habits for the girls,” Alba said. “Otherwise, we talk to them about being mindful and explain that things can be turned into something else one day. This can be as simple as teaching them about recyclables and showing how to sort bottles and cans from trash.”
She added: “We also do a lot of DIY crafts like using cardboard boxes to make airplanes and dollhouses—our creative playtime together similarly shows the girls about repurposing old items.”
The Sin City star says involving kids in the process is not only fun, but educational.
“Involving children in gardening and cooking is another great way to inspire eco-friendly living,” Alba shared. “Caring for the plants in our herb wall garden helps Honor understand the steps to growing food (including patience!), how it ultimately lands on her plate, and about being a good steward of the planet.”
The proud mom added: “Honor is also a great sous chef when we’re in the kitchen, so being a part of the dinner process encourages her to eat the foods she grows and develops her taste for fresh ingredients. Hopefully, this lays the foundation for children to prioritize their health and that of the planet.”
Brothers & Sisters star Gilles Marini and his wife of 15 years, Carole, are parents to two kids: son Georges, 14, and daughter Juliana, 6. The Switched at Birth actor told us about doing their part for “Mother Earth.”
“I am very into making sure that we do our part for Mother Earth,” Marini said. “Lots of thing in my life, in my house, are toward using less energy, like recycling rain water, etc. My kids helped me set up everything. It’s a super, super important thing to me.”
He added: “We need to change the way we all live. We’ve got to worry about the amount of water we use, the cars we drive, the electricity we use, and more.”
Mission Makeover host Julie Moran is mom to daughters Miaya, 13, and Makayla, 8. The Entertainment Tonight alum chatted about introducing her girls to Earth Day and maintaining an eco-friendly household.
“That’s a good question and it’s something I haven’t talked to the girls about yet,” Moran said of celebrating Earth Day. “Every night we sit down for dinner and we have what we call “Roses and Thorns.” We talk about what their “Rose of the Day” and “Thorn of the Day” were. It’s really cool. We get into these really amazing discussions about what went well during the day and what was maybe a sticking point. I will definitely bring up the Earth Day discussion during our Roses and Thorns segment, as it is pretty appropriate. We’ll have to decide how to celebrate it this year. Thank you for reminding me!”
“You know, my daughters are really teaching me how to be eco-friendly,” she continued. “They come home from school with so many fantastic ideas. We’ve got a side little garden that they planted and we have recycling bins that they are so dedicated to. They also steered me away from using plastic in their snack. Instead we try to use recyclable containers. Likewise, we don’t use plastic water bottles anymore. They have water bottles that they wash, refill, and take every day.”
She added: “They actually come home from school with more ideas than me on ways to be eco-friendly. They will say, “Let’s not use paper bags anymore, I know they are recyclable, but there are these pretty cloth lunch boxes and snack boxes we can use.” It’s great, because I am a different generation and I learn from them.”
With the release of her latest CD, Somebody’s Baby, mom-of-two Lisa Matassa debuts her third album. The country crooner told us about instilling eco-friendly habits with her two teenagers – Alexa, 17, and Frank, 15 – at an early age.
“In addition to recycling paper, plastic and glass, my kids knew from an early age that if they have something they can no longer wear, no longer want or need, they should ask themselves “Can I or someone else reuse this item?” Anything someone else can reuse they put in a bag, label it and we drop it off at either the church, the animal shelter or to anyone who needs it,” Matassa said.
Stefanie Wilder-Taylor is lighting up the small screen in the new NickMom show, Parental Discretion with Stefanie Wilder-Taylor that is “all about the humor involved in parenting.”
The funny mom recently shared her upcoming plans for Earth Day with her three daughters: Elby, 8, and 5-year-old twins Matilda and Sadie.
“For Earth Day, we will probably do what we do every year and take a trip to another country to build a well for the day,” Wilder-Taylor joked. “When we get back, we will compost the neighborhood’s trash and build a robot out of the city’s recyclables. Okay, I’m kidding. Our schools usually have a big Earth Day celebration and at home my kids are very conscious of recycling. Plus, no one likes a litter bug!”
FOX Business anchor Nicole Petallides dished about living life “in moderation” in New York City with her family-of-four.
“We live in New York City and we try not to use too much of anything,” Petallides said. “Life in moderation. Though sometimes that seems unattainable. But, fewer chemicals is our overall choices for the most part in foods and all we do. We don’t let the water run. We turn off TVs and lights in rooms we’re not using.”
She added: “The most obvious is we recycle. The boys have their chores and daily responsibilities.”
Already parents to 2-year-old daughter Gia, Mario Lopez and Courtney Lopez are expanding their family.
The newlyweds recently opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about their baby on-the-way and the importance of being eco-friendly.
“We are teaching Gia how important it is to recycle,” Lopez said. “We also just changed our whole house to LED lights.”
Eureka star Salli Richardson-Whitfield recently told us about her two kids – daughter Parker, 8, and son Dre, 4 – and teaching them to respect mother nature.
“As Eco as we can,” Richardson-Whitfield said of maintaining a green household. “We always recycle and we plan on planting in our garden on Earth Day.”
The funny mom gave us the scoop about her Earth Day birthday, and her sons Dash, 5, and Beckett, 3, who are “very eco-friendly.”
“Earth Day also falls on my birthday, so if it was a choice I am going to choose my birthday over Earth Day,” she joked. “I wish I was that green. The boys do activities at school for Earth Day. Kids these days know more about that stuff than I do. They tell me, “Oh mom, you shouldn’t use that product, that’s got such and such in it,” or they’ll say, “You shouldn’t throw away that water bottle, you should re-fill it.” I’m just like, “Oh, good point!” If we were going to do anything for Earth Day, they should probably plan it, as they are much more on top of it.”
She added: “My sons are very eco-friendly. It’s amazing. The bad news is that I drive a Land Rover, which gets like 10 miles to the gallon. In return, I use cloth diapers with my kids as a trade-off!”
Melissa Joan Hart:
Melissa & Joey star Melissa Joan Hart and husband Mark Wilkerson have a busy household with three young sons: Mason, 7, Brady, 4, and Tucker, 6 months.
The Sabrina, the Teenage Witch alum talked to us about how she’s been reducing her carbon footprint for years.
“I have been hyper aware of our footprint on the environment for a long time, since my days in Nickelodeon studios as a teen when I helped launch a recycling program,” Hart said.
“The boys understand about waste, about not letting the water run (it uses up all the snowflakes is what we tell them) and about recycling,” she added. “We also find times to ride our bikes instead of take the car.”
Audiences first fell in love with Tiffani Thiessen as Kelly Kapowski in Saved by the Bell and later Valerie Malone in Beverly Hills, 90210. Now we love her as event planner Elizabeth Burke in White Collar, and doting mom to 2-year-old daughter Harper.
The actress recently opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about the importance of leading an eco-friendly life.
“Earth Day is very important to us,” Thiessen said. “I’ve always been a believer in being green. We as a family recycle. We grow our own veggies and we have water tanks that store rain water and we then use to water our yard.”
Seven-time Olympic medalist Amanda Beard is set welcome her second child this summer with husband Sacha Brown. The swimming champion is already mom to 3-year-old son Blaise.
Amanda recently shared her family’s love of the environment.
“We try to be very eco-friendly in our house,” Beard said. “We love our planet and have a huge passion for animals and all living creatures. We try to teach our son to respect nature. From the littlest bug to the largest whale, from flowers to cactus. Respect and recycle!!!”
