DIY: Wood Grain Designed Doormat

I wanted a unique doormat to greet my visitors (and my family) whenever they stopped by. There are many cute doormats available in stores, but why not make something unique if you can? I considered doing words, but wanted something a little more interesting so I chose to create a wood grain design. It was easy!

First, purchase all the supplies you need:

  • poster board
  • a plain doormat (from Home Depot)
  • spray paint
  • double-sided tape

Next, draw out your design on the poster board. I used a design on a piece of fabric that I have. Make sure you go all the way to the edges using a Sharpie marker. Once you have that done start marking Xs in every other line or however you need to in order to create the final look.

Once you have finished that part, cut the long sides off by about half an inch. Do not discard because you will use them.

Then start cutting along the lines of your design and place each piece back where they were. Do not throw any of them away just yet.

Add double-sided tape to the long side pieces that you cut off. You are going to use these to hold all of your pieces you need together.

Begin sticking your non-X pieces on the taped part where their original markings were. It should look something like this now.

Lay your design over top of your mat and spray paint. I had to use a wooden skewer to hold down the knot pieces in the middle as I sprayed around them.

Then you are done!!! So easy!
