DIY Crafts: Hillbilly Crystal aka Redneck Wine Glasses

This article was originally posted on January 2011! We will be sharing older, popular articles as we go along, in case you missed them.

I am happy to share a craft with you that I did recently. One that will save you money and look cool too.

I’m not a wine snob at all, it all tastes just ok to me, and serves just about one purpose. In fact, all we drink out of are mason jars anyway. You can take the boy out of Alabama but you can’t take the Alabama out of the boy. My wife is right there with me drinking her lemonade out of a mason jar as well. That’s our fine china, or hillbilly crystal as I call it.

I thought I’d hunt around for some wine glasses for us, because after all, we can’t always drink wine from a cup… or can we? After a few searches, I found a way to have the best of both worlds for us….

Introducing the Redneck Wine Glass…

Supplies:

Glass Candlestick(s) (found at Jo-Ann Fabrics)
Mason Jar(s) (found at Jo-Ann Fabrics)
Sand Paper
Glass Glue (found at Jo-Ann Fabrics)

Super cheap and super classy, err country.

Instructions:

Rough the top edges of the candlesticks with the sandpaper.

Line with glass glue and press to the bottom of your mason jar. I chose a medium sized but fit to your liking.

Make sure it’s centered and press together for about 15 seconds and leave to cure over night.

Simple, creative and country.

Impress your guests with your hillbilly crystal and serve some down-home punch, Texas tea, or fruit wine.

Cheers!

I’m going to make and give a set of these to my daughter. Will she be able to put them in the dishwasher? Lee

        • Jessica

To be honest, I would wash them by hand just to be safe. The glue IS dishwasher safe but I am not sure how long it will last.

I started making these a couple months ago. They were slow to sell until I started taking mine with me when going out. I received so many compliments and peole asked where I got it. When I told them I made them they were excited and asked if I had any with me. I reply “Sure! I have some in my car”. One Friday nite I sold 7 while enjoying dinner with my boys. Next day I sold 6 while out. I gave 1 to a friend as a gift and her boss loved them so much he ordered 12. Fun and easy to make and great conversation piece….

Do you find that this glass glue holds well with liquid inside the glass. I can’t seem to find anything that will hold together when a drink gets inside the glass and sweats, they just fall right apart. I have tried E6000 and a glass bond from Hobby Lobby. Any suggestions? Thanks!
