I had not seen Nathan in years. When I was in grade school he and I were inseparable. We were the absolute best of friends. Coming from a small town in the south, the only two punk rockers in town would naturally gravitate towards each other. We would meet up on the weekends to spend all day skateboarding, listening to punk albums we had acquired, and getting into the regular amount of trouble grade school age boys would get into. I remember him having a sense of humor that I really appreciated, and we had some really great times together.
Almost 15 years had passed when we reconnected. Through a popular social media website, Nathan and I were chatting once again. After a few series of conversations, reliving funny memories, and just catching up about where our lives are now, Nathan planned a trip to visit me in my new town in Florida.
While he was here, we were just going to catch up, and he wanted to make a permanent memory that would last forever. For 10 years I was a practicing, and licensed tattoo artist and Nathan wanted a tattoo from one of his oldest friends.
When he arrived it was just like no time had passed at all. He had the same sense of humor he always had and we really enjoyed catching up together. The next day he would meet me at my tattoo studio to get some artwork, although he did not know what exactly it was that he wanted.
While he was visiting my home, my daughter, about three at the time, really took a liking to Nathan. For some reason though she couldn’t say “Nathan” and instead insisted on calling him “Smooth’n”. Boy did we really have a laugh at that. For the remainder of his stay he was no longer “Nathan” and could now only be referred to as “Smooth’n”.
The next day when he showed up at my studio, he still wasn’t sure what he wanted to get as a tattoo, but was sure he wanted something to remind him of his time in Florida. I had already drawn up the perfect piece for him and decided I would give it to him as a gift.
He would now be the proud owner of his very own, custom and personalized tattoo. When he saw the drawing, there was no question that he wanted it on his body forever. He was pleased with the artwork and the sentiment both. Considering it would be a gift from me to him, he just couldn’t pass it up. He was now the proud owner of a personalized “Smooth’n” tattoo, with lettering wrapped around the state of Florida.
It was a great time having him visit, and I still think fondly of that weekend he came to visit and the hilarious tattoo that he agreed to get.
Although this might not exactly be the personalized gift that is right up your alley, the sentiment is the same. Personalizing a gift really shows that you care about someone, and that you have taken the time to really think of them. Even if you are just adding their name to something as simple as a coffee mug, creating a home-made piece of artwork just for them, making a personalized gift bag with small items that you think they would enjoy, or having a personalized shirt made, you’ve shown your thoughtfulness with a great idea that’s just right for the holiday season, or any time worth celebrating.
If you aren’t ready to give such a commitment of the flesh like my dear friend “Smooth’n”, or if the gift is for someone a little too precious and young for a tattoo, I’d suggest one of my favorite clothing companies that have personalization options, Bright Star Kids.
