Tech Talk: The Apple Announcement

Welcome to Jess T.’s Tech Tuesday, where all your geek are belong to us!

This week’s Tech Tuesday has been collaboratively written by all the geeks at Modern Day Moms!

Apple is launching the iPhone 4S.

After being leaked early by the Japanese Apple site, it was confirmed that that while everyone hoped for an iPhone 5, the world is being given the iPhone 4S. Tim Cook, the new CEO of Apple took the stage for the big announcement this morning to highlight the features, as well as a new iPod Nano and more!

The iPhone 4S is launching October 14th with pre-orders beginning this Friday, the 7th. With an upgraded camera (8MP, finally on par with the Android phones), a speedier processor and up to 64 gb of space, its not a dramatic departure from the current iPhone4 but its a nice boost. Another bit of awesome news? SPRINT GETS AN iPHONE! Yes, the iPhone4S will be available on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint!

One of the things we loved about the new iPhone 4S is…..

Siri!

Using your voice, you will be able to do amazing things with your iPhone. Everything from weather and traffic to scheduling appointments, Siri is billed as a “virtual personal assistant” in the palm of your hand! Now this isn’t like those robots you talk to when you call somewhere trying to pay your bill. You know, the kind where you end up screaming “MAIN MENU YOU SONOFA…” (haha) Siri can be talked to like an actual person, and gets more accurate the more you talk to it. Jasmine says, “I love that you can control your phone via Siri. I can set my alarm, text my husband, check the weather, without having to physically do so!

The most exciting reveal of the day? The new iOS 5 Software.

Some of our favorite features include:

Notification Center

All your alerts. All in one place.
You get all kinds of notifications on your iOS device: new email, texts, friend requests, and more. With Notification Center, you can keep track of them all in one convenient location. Just swipe down from the top of any screen to enter Notification Center. Choose which notifications you want to see. Even see a stock ticker and the current weather. New notifications appear briefly at the top of your screen, without interrupting what you’re doing. And the Lock screen displays notifications so you can act on them with just a swipe. Notification Center is the best way to stay on top of your life’s breaking news.

Reminders

A better way to do to-dos!
Next time you think to yourself, “Don’t forget to…,” just pull out your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and jot it down. Reminders lets you organize your life in to-do lists complete with due dates and locations. Say you need to remember to pick up milk during your next grocery trip. Since Reminders can be location based, you’ll get an alert as soon as you pull into the supermarket parking lot. Reminders also works with iCal, Outlook, and iCloud, so changes you make update automatically on all your devices and calendars.

Wi-Fi Sync

Wirelessly sync your iOS device to your Mac or PC over a shared Wi-Fi connection. Every time you connect your iOS device to a power source (say, overnight for charging), it automatically syncs and backs up any new content to iTunes. So you always have your movies, TV shows, home videos, and photo albums everywhere you want them.

But don’t worry about needing to shell out cash for the iPhone4S just get iOS5. It is compatible with:

iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPod touch 3rd generation
iPod touch 4th generation
iPad
iPad 2

Prices for the iPhone 4S are set for $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32 GB, and $399 for 64 GB. (Prices reflect agreement to new two-year contracts or applicable upgrade with your current plan.)

Hate that Siri is only available on the new iPhone 4S… but I understand they need something to draw people in besides the camera, speed, etc. Siri seems like a great thing and I wish it would be available on the iPhone 4, however, not sure it’s enough to have me rushing to the preorder website on the 7th.

T-mobile and AT&T have been in talks to merge. Don’t think it’s coming to T-mobile anytime soon. Hopefully the merge happens soon for you Lulu!
