Wine Review: Concannon- Crimson & Clover

Welcome to Wine Wednesday! Here you will find new wines at an affordable price. See all of our Wine Wednesday features here. You can also view our Cocktail Corner posts here.

Living in Northern California I am surrounded by some pretty outstanding wineries. I love to support local wineries, especially when those wineries make some impressive wines.

Just recently I was introduced to Concannon Vineyards Crimson & Clover. It was a wine that was created for John Concannon’s father, Jim, who is actually the “Father of America’s first Petite Sirah.” It was presented to him for his 80th Birthday. What an amazing gift to receive!

“The name Crimson & Clover reflects pride in our Irish heritage; the clover is the traditional Irish symbol for prosperity and crimson pays homage to the strong, bright, deep red color of the blend. This wine is unique in the Conservancy tier as the first Petite Sirah blend and consists of 50 percent Petite Sirah, 25 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 percent Syrah and l0 percent Zinfandel. Crimson & Clover upholds the virtues of a Petite Sirah while adding rich deep berry flavors, softness and complexity. 10,000 cases will be produced.”

Aromas of currant, clove, and vanilla lead into bright, fruit flavors of blackberry on the palate. The spicy finish is soft and long with hints of leather and tobacco. Crimson & Clover is one pretty impressive wine. In fact, I’ve been thinking about it for the past couple of days now. I’ve mentioned this on my last Whine-O Wednesday post, but I tend to plan out meals to pair with my wine and there are so many wonderful foods you could pair this wine with for some incredible meals!

I had to share something that I learned about their Conservancy collection. Did you know that all of the Conservancy wines are sourced 100% from grapes grown in precious Livermore vineyards that are protected from urban encroachment by a conservation trust that preserves the land for perpetuity. All the Conservancy wines are terroir-driven with an emphasis on balancing fruit with wine-making style. The Tri-Valley Conservancy now has over 3,100 acres. Pretty impressive! I actually work for a company that started an Agricultural Conservancy in the area I live in, so I find this to be completely AWESOME! It makes this wine even that more special!

Want to hear the best part?

This wine only has an SRP of $15! If you are a fan of excellent red wines, I would highly recommend trying this. And while you are at it… take their recommendation and pair it with a Black pepper-crusted filet mignon with goat cheese or grilled artichoke with tarragon aioli. OH… MY… YUM!

Slainte!

(Irish for cheers)
