Having a cold when you’re pregnant is tough. You can’t take many over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms, and you’re already tired as can be! I remember having a cold when I was about 6 months pregnant. It was awful. My doctor said I could take 2 doses of Zicam a day, but that really wasn’t enough to get the full benefits of zinc. But what’s worse than being pregnant with a cold, is having a baby or toddler with a cold! At least, in my opinion. I hate to see my kiddo suffering through a cold without many options for relief.
I heard about this product Zarbee’s, and wanted to share it with you, even though I haven’t tried it myself. I thought this was the perfect time to share this and other cold remedies that are safe for pregnant women, young children, and nursing moms too. ‘Tis the season, after all!
What is Zarbee’s?
Zarbee’s is an all natural line of cold care products that contain no drugs, no alcohol, no artificial flavors or colors, and are gluten-free. Zarbee’s boasts that they are recommended by Pediatricians across the nation, so you can bet I’ll be chatting with mine about it. Zarbee’s makes cough syrups for day time and night-time. They both soothe sore throats and help boost the immune system with ingredients like honey, vitamin C, and zinc. The night-time version has a small, child safe dose of melatonin (.5 mg) to help promote a healthy night’s rest. Zarbee’s is safe for children over 2 and pregnant or nursing women. Like I said, I haven’t tried this yet, but I will be when the time comes!

Children’s Tea
I was at the grocery store the other day, and saw Traditional Medicinals makes tea for kids! There’s a whole line up of teas that come in child safe portions. Even though teas and herbs are natural, they can still have harmful effects on the body if you take too much or combine certain things. I had always assumed that herbal teas just weren’t safe for kids. I am so glad to know Traditional Medicinals put some thought into making kid-safe packages of tea. There’s a Cold Care, and a Throat Coat version (among others) that will help safely ease the symptoms of a cold in your little ones (over 2 years old).
Check out the Traditional Medicinals website for more kid safe teas.
The Neti Pot
This little tea-pot looking device is probably something you should just keep around the house whether you suffer from allergies or want natural relief from cold symptoms. If you haven’t heard of a Neti Pot before and don’t know what it does, let me tell you. It’s a little weird. It’s basically an irrigation system for your sinuses. You actually pour water (or saline solution) in one side of your nose and it comes out the other, flushing away the sinus congestion. Not gonna lie guys. It’s a little strange at first. But so worth the awkwardness you feel the first time you use it. NeilMed has a great video that shows how to use it. It’s safe for kids, too. I can’t imagine a toddler going for it, but an elementary school aged child should be totally fine with it. I love the Neti Pot because I have horrible allergies in the winter (yes! In the winter!) and I can’t tell you how many sinus infections I used to get because of it. The Neti Pot really helps to keep infections at bay, and helps with head congestion from colds as well. Because this is just a sinus flush with no drugs, it’s safe to use with kids and pregnant or nursing women.
Now you have at least a few more natural cold relief ideas safe for the whole family. And here’s one more little tip that might put a smile on your face, moms. Dark chocolate contains as much as 64% of the RDA of zinc. Zinc is a powerful essential mineral that can help boost your immune system.
So, go. Eat chocolate. It’s for your health!
