I remembered how popular the “dirt and worm” pudding cups were in elementary school and had the biggest craving for them. But, I didn’t have enough milk to make chocolate pudding so I decided to take the idea and put it in a cupcake. Sugar rush. These cupcakes would be great for a school party or a birthday party.
I used my favorite chocolate cupcake recipe here. If anything, make the cupcake base because this is personally one of the best plain chocolate cupcakes that I’ve ever had. Simple, but rich and chocolaty.
Dirt and Worm Chocolate Cupcakes
Ingredients
For the cupcakes (makes 12 cupcakes)
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoons vanilla
Chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups crushed Oreos (or other chocolate cookies)
24 gummy worms
1. Preheat the oven to 350 . In a bowl, beat butter and sugar until softened until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time.
2. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. 3. In a measuring cup, measure out the milk and add in the vanilla.
3. Add about a third of the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and beat to combine. Add in half of the milk/vanilla and beat to combine. Continue adding, alternating between dry and wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips.
4. Scoop out batter into a prepared cupcake tin, filling them about 1/2 way full. On top of the batter, generously sprinkle on crushed Oreos to create a “dirt” effect.
5. Bake at 350 degrees for 22-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes clean.
6. Arrange 2 gummy worms per cupcake. Poke the bottom half of the gummy worm into the cupcake as if the worm is crawling out. Top with melted chocolate to make a “mud” effect.
