DIY Citrus Sea Salt Coconut Oil Scrub

I am a firm believer in sea salt scrubs. I have a small jar in my shower at all times and depending on my mood, I reach for a scrub containing lavender or one containing some form of citrus. The best thing about sea salt scrubs is the feeling they give your skin after you use them. Soft, scented and moisturized.

Now, please don’t follow our instructions exactly. The good thing about sea salt scrubs is the variation that comes with it. I highly recommend using what you have on hand for the most part. Some things however, you just can’t skip.

You will need:

Coconut Oil (melted)
Avocado Oil (found at health food stores)
Lemon Essential Oil (optional)
Grapefruit Essential Oil
Coarse Sea Salt
Fine Sea Salt
Himalayan Pink Salt (optional, had some on hand so I decided to throw it in the mix)
Lime Juice
Lemon Juice (optional)
Vodka (or Witch Hazel)

Notes:

The base for this scrub is the coconut oil. It will be a thin liquid at first and then harden as it dries. Avocados are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E, and can provide skin with deep moisture. The oil of an avocado is able to penetrate the skin with its thin consistency; it is also thick enough to serve as a protective barrier on the skin, much like a lotion. In addition to providing the skin with moisture, the antioxidants found in avocado oil — particularly vitamins A and E — can help soothe sunburned skin. Avocado oil also contains sterolins, which are natural steroids. They may be effective in boosting collagen production and in treating age spots. With its high level of vitamin E, avocado oil may reduce itching and inflammation of the skin and is also beneficial in softening rough and cracked skin. * source

Coconut oil is also amazing for your skin!

Gather all your ingredients and set them in front of you. You are about to make a fun science experiment, or so it will feel like.

Depending on the jar or storage container you are using, you are going to have to adjust the amounts of each ingredient based on the size. For my scrub, I used 2 17oz containers of sea salt (one fine, one coarse) however, when using a mason jar with a lid, I would probably only fill the salt 1/2 of the way up and add the rest of the ingredients on top. I always add the salt first and then the oils. In the end, it’s easy to shake it up without having the oil stuck on the bottom.

Play with the amounts and just know that the final consistency should not be watery or super liquid-like.

Directions:

For a mason jar container:

Fill the jar halfway with salt. A good even mixture of coarse and fine.

Add in your oil: 1 tbsp avocado oil, 2 tbsp coconut oil.

1 tsp vodka

1 tsp lime juice

1 tsp lemon juice

8 drops of grapefruit essential oil

8 drops of lemon essential oil

Put the lid on and shake shake shake!!!

It’s fun to play around with your scrubs and add in different things. I even added in a little lemon zest. Have fun and enjoy!
