Here is another easy DIY for those of you looking to spice up a certain space in your home. I’ve seen many poufs that I love, but some were so costly. My next pouf will be a gold one, but for now, I made one with an interesting geometric design. I chose a heavier fabric since this will be used in the floor and for sitting on or propping your feet on. So, with that, I bought some heavy duty thread as well. The fabric and thread were purchased at Joann Fabrics. The fabric is a Nate Berkus design. I had no idea they were going to be carrying his stuff, but I am excited that they are! There are several other fabrics of his that I plan to purchase and use for the same reason. These poufs are going in my son’s room because they are a young and fun design.
I purchased 1.75 yards when they had it on sale at 50% off. That made my fabric a little under $20. Always make sure you add a few extra inches to what you purchase to allow for shrinkage when you wash it.
Cut 6 pieces 19X19″ wide.
Lay two pieces together with the front sides facing each other. Pin down one side and sew with a 1/4 inch seam.
When you sew, start about 1/4 of an inch from the top and finish 1/4 of an inch from the bottom. Do 4 of the pieces like this.
Once you you have the two sides sewn on each set, connect the sets together, right sides facing each other. You are basically connecting all of the sides together at this point.
Now ow start adding in your top piece by connecting the sides together. Sew as you have before.
When you add your bottom piece, leave about half of the final seam open so that you can invet your pouf and insert the filler. The reason you do the bottom piece last is because it will be sewn by hand and might not look as nice as the rest unless you are very careful and good at sewing by hand.
Once you have it inverted, begin to fill it with whatever filler you desire. I used styrofoam balls as I had found a large pack for cheap at Walmart. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough, so I purchased some Poly-Fil for the remaining part. This actually made it more comfy on the top. Make sure to stuff it full because over time it will begin to sink in and show wear.
In total this project cost around $35 and I know you could purchase a pouf at Target on sale for that price and save yourself the work, but this is a custom design. And sometimes you want something a little extra special!
Enjoy!
