Valentine’s Day has passed, but that doesn’t mean you should stop thinking about matters of the heart. Did you know that the entire month of February is dedicated to heart health? Heart disease is a leading cause of death among women in the US and this is all about remembering to take care of yours.
Adding exercise to your daily routine is a great way to improve your heart health, and stay physically fit.
Here are some ways you can ease into a program and stick with it:
Don’t do too much too soon. One of the most comment reasons people get sidetracked with it comes to exercise is doing too much too soon. Most people decide they are going to start an intense workout program and GO FOR IT! They hit the treadmill every day the first week. Muscle soreness sets in, or they get tired and the next thing they know, they are sleeping in instead of exercising. Start small with something you enjoy and work your way up to the marathon.
Set realistic goals for yourself. What is a reasonable amount of exercise time to fit into your current routine? Maybe it’s getting up 20 -30 minutes earlier for a walk, or a workout DVD.
Allow your body time to adjust to the new activity. When you’re feeling confident enough, add in more days or even a new exercise. Set the mood for success. No one wants to workout in a dark basement with no music. Or who wants to run on a treadmill facing a wall rather than a television? Maybe you’re the type of person that craves the outdoors. Make sure that whether you join a gym, are working out at home, or are headed to the local park, you’re in an environment you enjoy so you will look forward to your workouts rather than dread them.
Now that you’ve got your physical activity planned, let’s talk nutrition.
