DIY: Beachy Wooden Flag

This is such an easy DIY that anyone can do it. All you need is some pallet wood, paint, screws, glue and mini-starfish. This decorative piece can be a festive way to decorate for the 4th of July without straying away from the color scheme in the house. Think outside of the box! The flag doesn’t have to be red, white and blue.

First, cut out your wooden pieces to the length you’d like. (Somehow, I lost the photo of me doing this along the way, but you get the picture!) Hobby Lobby sells pallet wood bundles if you’d rather buy them pre-cut.

Then use some mending plates or wooden pieces to hold the planks together. Attach these to the back side. You can purchase the mending plates at Walmart or any hardware store and they are inexpensive.

Also, if you want to hang your flag, make sure you attach the hardware for this as well before flipping to the front side.

Flip your flag over and get ready to apply your paint. Barely pour out the tiniest amount (I used Apple Barrel acrylic paint) and dip your brush into it, just dotting the tips of the bristles. Dot the paint onto the wood down a strip for each of the stripes you will create on your flag. Then drag your brush across to smear the dots and create a dry-brushed effect. This will create a rustic look without sanding.

Finish with your alternate paint color.

Apply your miniature starfish with Quick Grip or any other adhesive and you are done!
