I can’t really think of anything I enjoy more in the morning besides some wheat toast, butter & sweet strawberry freezer jam. My kiddo loves the jam on a sandwich with nutella. My grandma would make it all the time and it was a special treat growing up. It wasn’t until recently, after craving it, that I decided to look up the recipe. After reading pages and pages of different methods, I went with the easiest recipe that took the least amount of time. Did I mention it requires 4 things? The main thing here is Sure Jell Pectin. You can find it at any store but I actually found it at our Super Walmart.
I also found my Ball 8oz jars there. For this recipe, I used 4 8oz jars (had a tiny bit left over so I used an empty clean plastic container, like what ricotta would come in). You can use the glass or plastic jars.
The process is very simple. Rinse the strawberries off and take off tops. Crush them in a bowl (I used a potato masher). Mix sugar and strawberries together and let stand for 10 minutes. Stir pectin and water together in small saucepan and boil on med high for 1 min. Stir boiling water/pectin into strawberries and let stand for 3 minutes. Pour into jars, close lids and let it sit out for 24 hours before placing in freezer.
Note: I always just keep mine frozen. Can last 1 year in freezer or 1 month in fridge. I like my jam super cold and frozen. Mmm! On the pectin box, you will find many different recipes for jam. Peach, pepper, berry, apple. The possibilities are endless :)
Ingredients
2 cups crushed fresh strawberries
4 cups sugar
1 (1.75 ounce) package dry pectin
3/4 cup waterDirections
Mix crushed strawberries with sugar, and let stand for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, stir the pectin into the water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, and boil for 1 minute. Stir the boiling water into the strawberries. Allow to stand for 3 minutes before pouring into jars or other storage containers.
Place tops on the containers, and leave for 24 hours. Place into freezer, and store frozen until ready to use.

13 years agoIs it really that easy?! I have a question: I save jars from things like salsa and gravy, etc. Could I use those jars or do I really need to go buy Bell jars?

11 years agoDonna,
I would also be wary of using jars that once contained strongly scented items as it may have a residual scent even after washing and that could affect the flavor of your new item.

11 years ago AUTHORExactly! You don’t have to use the exact BALL jars, any type of mason or canning jar would work… like Wendy said, I would avoid anything that previously had something in it.

13 years agoDonna – For freezer jam, you would want to use a jar or something that will be safe to store in the freezer. Since you can freeze the jam for up to a year, I’m not sure how well certain glass containers will do… they might crack. However… f it’s safe for the freezer, I don’t see a problem.
Personally, I like to use plastic containers or the jars that I pictured in the post.
