In honor of Breastfeeding Week, I will be sharing my story, the short version.
Breastfeeding did not come easy for me, although I did everything I could to prepare for it. I took a class, I made sure I had all the essentials and I was adamant that I would be exclusively breastfeeding my daughter.
Then she was born.
Things didn’t work exactly as planned… you see, I had to have a c-section which in turn took a little bit longer for my supply to come in. By “took longer”, it took about 1 month or maybe even longer than that. It was a very slow process but I was determined. For the first 2 weeks of her life, I was upset and thought that it just wasn’t going to work so I fed her formula. I was unprepared and didn’t really know what to do at that point. However, I still tried. I tried and I tried.
Thankfully, she never got too confused by the switch.
By around the 2nd month, everything just clicked. All of a sudden, my supply was great, she was feeding easily and we got the hang of it. Everything I had prepared for before she was born didn’t really amount to what I had learned after she was born, especially when it came to breastfeeding. Every situation is different and every situation is unique.
The best advice I could give to any new mom is to do what’s best for you and for your baby and try not to give up.
Needless to say, breastfeeding wasn’t an easy one but I’m glad that it ended up working out for us. I ended up breastfeeding my daughter until she was 2 years old and I am so glad I stuck to it.
