Potty training is a time that many parents dread. With our little tots getting ready to make that big transition to the grown-up potty, it can be a time of frustration for everyone.
It has been over nine years since my oldest daughter was potty trained and now I am beginning to think about it again with my youngest. I started looking for tips and tricks to make the transition easier, and found some that really seemed to be great ideas. I watched this video recently and found it to be filled with invaluable information on how to make the potty training time fly by.
However not all children are that easy I had found. Many of these tips were ones that I tried with my oldest and we struggled with it for months. I tried everything from bribes to sitting on the potty chair almost all afternoon. We tried reading stories on the potty, and the list of ideas continue down the line with no real successes.
I remember having to go out of town for the weekend on a business trip and my husband staying home with my daughter. He laughed to himself as he told me that by the time I came back my oldest would be potty trained. For most of the time he took a backseat watching me try different techniques and all of them coming up short.
When I returned after the weekend, he greeted me at the door with a huge smile on his face and explain that our daughter was now potty trained. It’s not bad I didn’t believe you could do it, I just was so interested to know how he got done in two days what had been taking me months to work on.
His solution was a mixture of tough love and common sense. He said that he told her from that moment on she was to wear her big girl underwear. No more diapers, no more pull-ups, and I don’t lay her favorite cartoon character underwear was allowed. The kicker was that if she didn’t make it to the potty in time, the underwear would go straight to the trash and she would be forced to wear a boring pair that didn’t have her favorite cartoon characters on them at all.
He told me that was literally all it took. After throwing away one pair of her favorite underwear, she was potty trained completely. She never missed a trip to the bathroom since.
I was impressed with his quick thinking and ability to get the job done. She was so proud of herself when she showed me that she can use the potty like a big head and wipe with ease.
