How To Grow A Rockin’ Pepper Garden

I’m gonna share a little secret with you when it comes to growing a successful pepper garden… SAVE THE SEEDS. Save the seeds from the peppers you are about to eat (that have not been refrigerated). Refrigeration and pepper seeds are not friends, especially when trying to get them to germinate.

Here’s the first thing I do when I am preparing a pepper to use for dinner, I slice the pepper long ways and take out the seeds. I put them in a bowl and let them sit out and dry for a week or so.

Once the pepper seeds have dried out, I take them and wrap them either in saran wrap or put them in a baggy. I then mark what seeds they are (because it can get confusing). I sometimes wrap the seeds in saran wrap and then put all the bundles in one baggy and label it that way. You can do it any way you’re most comfortable with.

Here are some bell pepper seeds. These are seeds from 1 PEPPER! Do you realize how much money that can save you? Each seed will most likely germinate and each plant will bear 5-6 bell peppers. That’s… a ton of bell peppers. They aren’t cheap either, so if you can grow your own bell peppers, I would highly suggest it.

Another pepper that is easy to grow, jalapenos. I know some of you like to eat the seeds for the “heat factor” but if you can tone it down for one meal and save the seeds – you too can grow jalapeno plants with no problem.

It’s getting to the end of my gardening days for the spring. Since it’s now summer, my garden is slowly dying out and I will start preparing it for my fall harvest. However, do remember that pepper plants love the heat so they will probably outlast anything else you’ve had in your garden from your early spring harvest. I will probably get a few more peppers before the plant gives up.

Have you tried? Do you have any questions? Let me know and I will answer them!

I have a question: why aren’t my bell peppers growing!? haha! -Bex

Was the bell pepper refrigerated previously? What kind of seeds did you use? Packaged or fresh?

I used packaged organic seeds, by Burpee. The Carnival Mix! The plants took off and grew to about 4 inches tall really quickly……..and then that’s it. It’s like they are stuck at that size. My tomatoes too!!

Oh, I tried again…and it worked! Until the rabbits/birds/squirrels found the seedlings and ate them. Again. Sigh. Need to find a better way to plant them. I guess I should start them inside and wait until they get bigger before I plant them outside ;)
