Trust Your Instincts
Trust us, you’re going to be getting a ton of advice when you have a newborn. For the most part, the people who are giving this advice are coming from a place of love and truly want to help. Your grandparents especially will want to let you know about how they did things differently, like allowing the baby to sleep on their belly (big no no!). When this comes up, just nod your head, smile and thank them for the advice and put it in your back pocket. Nothing can trump your motherly instincts! It may feel overwhelming with all of this advice headed your way, but mama always knows best.
If someone keeps offering advice and they’re insisting that you’re ‘not doing things right’, you can kindly let them know how you feel! Tell them that while you appreciate their advice, you haven’t had much success with their method and prefer to do things your way. Each baby is different and everyone parents different and there is no harm in that.
Make Time For Your Friends
Although you have a new title as a mom, you’re still YOU! This means your friendships still stand and your friends are still important to have a healthy balance in life. If you haven’t gotten out with your friends since the day you left the hospital, be sure to schedule some time hanging out with your girlfriends. Schedule a day date or get out for a glass of wine and leave the baby at home with your spouse for an hour.
Sometimes people worry that after the baby comes, they won’t have time for their friends. That is only true if you let it be! It is important to make time for your friends and maintain those important relationships in your life. You’ll have to accept that you might not get to attend each girls night or every boozy outing now that you’re a mom, but you can still make good quality time to spend with your friends. Don’t coop yourself up at home – get out the house and connect with the people that love you the most.
