Surviving First Months with a Newborn Baby

Stay In Touch With Your Feelings

It took your body about 9-10 months to build up hormones preparing you for delivery. Right after the baby is born, those hormones come crashing down faster than ever which can result in a lot of crying and what is known as the baby blues. This is expected and normal for most moms. However, if you feel yourself having extreme sadness, anxiety or anger that lasts longer than a week or so, be sure to open up to your spouse, mom, care provider or therapist. Do not be afraid to open up and let them know how you’re feeling. Staying mentally healthy and strong is important for you to be the best mom possible. If you just can’t shake the blues and are crying for days on end and feeling very off, get some help. Post part depression effects more moms than you may realize and there are ways to cope and manage how you’re feeling. Never be too proud to ask for help, especially when you have a little one relying on you to be the best mom that you can be!

Take Time For You

Remember what made you happy and filled your bucket before you became a mom? Whether it was a hobby like photography, going to the gym, walking around Target, shopping for makeup – keep doing those things that made you, you! Don’t lose your identity in having your whole entire life in being a mom. Of course, it is the most important role and task you will ever have to do in your life, but you are still you!

It is important to find your ‘thing’ and make time to do it each week, if not every day if you can! If you have time to think about what this ‘thing’ will be before your baby arrives, write it in your calendar and stick to it. Don’t go weeks without doing something for yourself, or you won’t be the best version of yourself. Trust us!
