Welcome to Jess T.’s Tech Tuesday, where all your geek are belong to us!
Thinking of a picking up a laptop, netbook or new computer hardware for the coming holiday season? You might want to rethink that. The prices are going sky-high, due to an unfortunate bout of flooding in Thailand that they say may be the worst in 50 years!
What does a flood have to do with the price hike?
Well, Thailand happens to make hard drives. In fact, Thai hard drives account for about 40% of the world’s supply! So not only will the supply be diminished, but the cost of those for sale will go up! But don’t let this bad news kill your dreams for a holiday gift entirely since not all desktops, laptops and netbooks will be affected, as some use components made in China or somewhere else. However, many brands including Acer (a personal favorite) WILL be raising prices due to the use of hard disc drives made in the flood zone.
You have a few choices, some of which might be less than desirable:
1. Buy your dream item RIGHT THIS SECOND before prices go any higher.
2. Gift an “I-O-U” instead, and wait out the price increase.
3. Score an Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook, whose fancy components will NOT be affected by the coming price changes and is super swanky to boot, boasting 4GB of RAM and 20GB of solid-state storage!
4. It actually pains me to say this but… you could get a Mac instead. (But I don’t recommend it.)
Overall, its important to remember that while its inconvenient to have to wait or shell out more for the gift you were hoping for, we’re lucky to be weighing the pros and cons of buying a new tech item instead of rowing a boat to the local disaster relief center!
