Wine Review: Herding Cats- Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay

Welcome to Wine Wednesday! Here you will find new wines at an affordable price. See all of our Wine Wednesday features here. You can also view our Cocktail Corner posts here.

Never in my life did I ever think I would be drinking boxed wine, but the truth is I was and guess what? I enjoyed every second of it! But this isn’t your average boxed wine, everything from the design to the quality of the wine sets this apart from your $5 boxed wine at your local grocery store.

You see Herding Cats Wine has teamed up with Octavin Home Wine Bar to give a fresh approach to Artisan Wine. The wine comes in a super cute Octagon shaped boxed. By boxing the wine you are eliminating heavy glass and expensive cork and closures, which then reduces the cost of packaging and shipping, and pass on those savings to us!

Isn’t it super cute?!? LOVE it! There are a few more benefits to choosing Octavin Home Wine Bar’s PWC over four carbon-inefficient heavy glass bottle.

  • Reduces packaging waste by at least 85% and carbon emissions by 55%
  • More wine- It comes in 3 Liters!!! Umm.. YES please!
  • Unique package design ensures that every glass tastes as fresh and flavorful as the first for up to six weeks
  • Saves you money

Now onto Herding Cats Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay.

“Herding Cats wines are expressive in the art of blending unique blends from authentic South African varietals with varietals known globally. Th ese wines are crafted in a fresh new world style–medium-bodied with bright fruit fl avors. South African wines deliver outstanding value for the global wine dollar and these “spot-on” wines are no exception. Winemakers Pieter Carstens and Adam Richardson “herd together” signature South African grapes with popular varietals to create a blend for today’s discriminating consumer.”

Winemaker’s notes:

“In this lovely wine we have herded together the ever-so-popular South African Chenin Blanc with ever-so-flavorful Chardonnay to achieve an aromatic white with hints of green apple, bright citrus and a crisp, clean finish. The wine is versatile and food-friendly. ”

This was a very light and versatile Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay. I really wasn’t too sure what to expect from a a mix like this from South Africa, but it definitely impressed me. It was a very easy to drink wine and paired well with many of the foods we ate during the week that the wine lasted.

While enjoying everything about the Octavin packaging and the taste of Herding Cats Wine, I got to thinking. Next time we, or any of our friends, are having a get together or party, I will be buying Artisan Wines from Octavin Home Wine Bar. I mean really, it would be silly not to!

This wine would be great paired with a pasta tossed in fresh pesto, grilled jumbo shrimp with mango chutney, or simply as an aperitif.

Herding Cats Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay will run for about $24 for a 3L Premium Wine Cask or $8 for a 750mL bottle. Excellent prices if you ask me.
